Below you will find an overview of frequently asked questions concerning yoga classes in the studio of Yoga Maya Rotterdam. Is your question not answered? Please contact us by mail or phone.

Do I need experience?

Anybody can join the classes, although it is adviced to discuss which classes are most suitable for you. Are you in bad condition or do you have physical limitations? In that case we can advice a softer yoga style/class or a beginners course. Are you in good physical condition but you don’t have any yoga experience? In that case it is also recommended to learn the basics of yoga during a beginners course. But every person is different. You can also directly join the regular classes at a higher level. If you have doubts then we can give you a personal advice.

Do I have to pre-register?

For the yoga classes during the regular weekly schedule you can always join (please note that the classes with (*) only start when there are enough participants). If you register beforehand, we can guarantee you a spot in the chosen class. For yoga courses and workshops you are required to pre-register by mail.

What clothes should I wear?

Comfortable (sports) clothing in which you can easily move around is the most appropriate for yoga. The exercises are done with bare feet or with socks. During the relaxation you could cool down, so perhaps bring a vest or sweater to wear near the end of the class. In the Iyengar yoga class (on thursdays) you are required to wear short or tight trousers such as a legging. If you sweat a lot, please bring a towel with you.

How much time before class starts should I be present?

You are welcome in the yoga studio 15 minutes before class starts. Please make sure you are present at least 5 minutes before the class starts. The classes start on time en if you are late then you may unnecessarily disturb other students.

How can I prepare for the class?

To fully enjoy the yoga practice it is best to not eat anything two hours before class starts, or just light food.

Do I need special equipment?

All necessary class equipments are provided including yoga mats, meditation cushions and blankets. You can bring your own yoga mat if you prefer to do so. Ecological mats and relevant literature can be found in our yoga shop in the studio.

Do I have to practice often?

You are free to decide how often you practice yoga. Some want to practice every day, others once a week. Because yoga is so much fun to do, people often repeat the yoga exercises at home. If you practice regularly you will notice that the exercises get easier and that you are more energetic and relaxed in daily life.

Where is the studio?

The yoga studio is in the center of Rotterdam, close to the Central Station and Hofplein. The address is Vijverhofstraat 47, Rotterdam. Please take a look at Google Maps for the exact location and go to 9292OV for advice on accessibility by public transport.

What are the costs of classes

All information about costs can be found on our Payments-page. We operate with monthly subscriptions or other payment opportunities who don’t want to commit or who have irregular working schedules. Some activities can be joined free of charge (such as Satsang). A try-out subscription (one week) costs 15 Euro and you can join as many classes as you want.

What is the best way to pay?

Yoga courses, workshops and monthly payments can be pre-paid by giro ( made payable to Yoga Maya Rotterdam). Single classes, strip cards and try-out weeks can also be paid with a debit card before class

When are the classes given?

The schedule page provides all information concercing times and days of classes. Classes are provided 6 days a week. In the agenda you will find all information about workshops, courses and other special events.

Can anybody join the classes?

Yoga is suitable for everyone, regardless of age and physical condition. When doing yoga you learn to go inside and to feel what is good for you. You learn to practice at your own level and to appreciate this. That is why yoga specifically is very suitable to remain or become mentally and physically healthy.

What is the difference between Ashtanga & Sivananda yoga?

Generally speaking Ashtanga yoga is one of the yoga styles which can be physically more demanding. During the classes a lot of yoga postures are done in sequence with the breath as the leas. You can sweat considerably during class. Sivananda yoga is a holistic form of yoga and its physical intensity is based somewhere between Hatha yoga and Ashtanga yoga. Besides yoga postures the Sivananda class also includes breathing exercises, relaxation, mantra singing and possibly meditation. Both styles can be amended to your own physical condition and are suitable for diverse target groups. Detailed information and descriptions can be found at the class-page and the schedule-page. If you want to experiment which yoga styles suits you best, you can take a try-out week. Your intuition will often give you enough information on which yoga style is the best for you.

Are there shower facilities in the studio?

Yes! Please bring your own towel and make use of the shower facilities. The shower are can also be used privately as a dressing room.
